Headaches?

Postby Guest » Fri Dec 04, 2009 1:00 am

My name is Chelsea, I am from Saskatchewan Canada.

I have been suffering from daily headaches and neck & shoulder pain/infalmmation for over two years. Although I have known I grind my teeth for several years, I believe it is now getting worse, or at least starting to show. My jaw clicks when I chew, I can't open my mouth as wide anymore, and I have splintered one of my front teeth. Since I've been paying attention the past couple of weeks, I am constantly catching myself clenching during the day.

I realize this all points towards bruxism or tmj. I am wondering if anyone else out there is also suffering from headaches/muscle inflammation related to bruxism?? The headache usually begins a couple of hours after I get up in the morning. My shoulder and neck muscles are as hard as rock.

Any sharing of experiences or ideas are most welcome!

Hi Chelsea

Oh dear your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. Unfortunately, it is through tooth grinding I have mine :( I have been suffering on and off for many years. I now have to wear a night guard to stop me grinding my teeth. Thank goodness I dont always suffer - I seem to have bouts of it, sometimes when I am a bit stressed. I am not aware that I grind at night but have noticed during the day sometimes I clench my teeth and my face aches. I read the other day hypnosis is supposed to help? Have not tried this yet, maybe I will.

It can be very depressing especially when your face aches. Nobody really understands as they cannot physically see you in pain. I try not to worry too much about it as it only makes it worse. Apparently, Indian head massages or any facial massages would help as well. My dentist told me to gently massage my face especially around the cheek area - this may help you.

Good luck and I hope you find something to help.

Bye for now

I have exactly the same symptoms you describe - jaw pain, and constant tension in my neck and shoulders. I find myself constantly rolling my head at work, and having to massage my cheeks, and temples. If it hadn't had been for the dentist pointing out my eroded teeth the other day and suggesting a mouth guard I doubt I would have discovered this must be Bruxism.

Now here's the problem. Everything I've read suggests this is a night time activity, but I'm convinced I am grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw during the day. I get headaches towards the end of the day, not in the morning, and I've noted that when I wake at night my jaw is relaxed and open. So I'm reluctant to spend 300€ on a mouth guard.

Any suggestions for treatment? Or is anyone else a day-bruxer like me?!
