How much did you pay for your mouthguard?

Postby Guest » Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:38 pm

I had my first mouthguard several years ago now and I can't remember how much I paid for it, I would guess at about £30 - 40.

I've since moved to a new dentist and had a new (horrid) mouthguard made while I was on maternity exemption, which means I payed £0

My husband has now just been told by our dentist that he needs one and it is going to cost £177!! and this is the NHS price.

Personally I think that this is EXTORTIONATE.

How much have you all paid?

I have a friend that has TMJ. Her jaw used to randomly pop out of place until she got this retainer-looking thing. I think it is the same thing you're talking about--a splint is it? In any case, she only had to pay her deductible and then her Dental Insurance covered the rest. She told me it would have been $3,000. Thank goodness for insurance because that's a lot of money. And it has seemed to help her a lot.

I paid around £125 for one that just covers my front teeth. It prevents me from being able to put my back teeth together. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone! I have been waking up with pain in my front teeth because I grind them so hard!

A late reply, but mine cost about £200!!! And then I lost it on holiday... There's no way I'm shelling out another £200. There must be similair bite guards for a fraction of the cost... :?

Hi I have a dentist on the NHS. She worked it so that when I was having some minor treatments which amounted to around £40 she suggested that I top up the payment with £60 and that she would be able to provide the mouth guard. I have had a long history of teeth grinding since a child. I have resisted a mouth guard up until now, but my teeth have gotten so bad and they are jaggered and chipped with very thin enamel that I had to do something.

The mouth guard i had to have two fittings, one to mould it to replicate my teeth and the second to ensure that it fitted. Its sits on my bottoms teeth at night and because it is moulded to my teeth it sits quite snugly on my teeth, but at 27 isn't the sort of thing I am thrilled about going to bed in...it makes me feel like an old woman with dentures! Also, it does not stop the grinding, it only protects the teeth.

I am looking into to have some veneers to protect my teeth as they are very sensitive and look unsightly, but will continue to use the mouth guard to prevent any further damage.

Good luck! Lynsey.
